I AM THE WORLD Campaign: TANE Organics

Meredith Legenos

We are thrilled to have Sheree Lee, founder of Tane Organics, explain her love of organics and how Tane came to be.  We also learn about her involvement with the "I AM THE WORLD Campaign," and the creation of the "I am world globe." We at Sprout love the Tane brand for both it's wonderfully soft organic clothing and for it's positive message and helping others.

Luxury at TANE organics means using the purest certified organic cotton.  It also echoes TANE's holistic connection with the planet and its people.

TANE organics believes that the value of Great Design can support an important cause.  The "I AM THE WORLD" campaign was created with the hope of designing products where 100% of the sales would be allocated to the Remote Classrooms International Foundation, in conjunction to funding local organizations that focuses on children's education.

The idea came to me after my many visits to remote schools in the highlands of Peru.  I became aware of the desperate need of funding these rural environments where children sometimes travel for hours, by foot, to reach a place of learning.

In thinking how design can contribute in a collaborative manner, the Crochet Globe Rattle, in 100% organic cotton, was designed as an introduction to this concept.  The expertise of the artisans is demonstrated in the intricate details of this product.  By designing a well designed item, using hands from the community, then return the funding back to its citizens - is the simple platform of the campaign.

The TANE Globe celebrates the joy of childhood, the playfulness of a simple Great Design, and the closeness of the world in our hands.  Each Globe is individually numbered and tagged with its destination, to keep us connected and aware.

The concept of creating TANE organics derived from the love I developed in working with the organic cotton fiber.  In learning of the health benefits, the global impact, the super luxurious hand of the yarn, and the many possibilities in designing from the purest fiber, it was the perfect material for a designer to create.

I was also aware that in the market place, there was a void in a well merchandised children's collection, using top quality organic cotton.

The combination of using the purest, healthiest material for babies, and the love and vision of a cohesive children's collection is the foundation of TANE organics.

The health benefits of organic baby clothing is due to the fact that baby's skin is more porous and thinner than adults.  Their skin absorbs things very easily, and is thinner, more fragile.  A baby's skin is also less resistant to bacteria and harmful substances in the environment, especially if it's irritated.  Babies sweat less efficiently, so it's harder for them to maintain their inner body temperature.  This means that children are at greater risk for pesticides-related health problems than adults.  Studies have shown that skin irritations, and allergies are developed at early stages of life due to toxin as well as environmental pollutants.

Organic clothing uses cotton that is not farmed in the conventional ways.  Pesticides are not used; other safer methods are used to produce the crops.  Workers have better working conditions, water quality is not compromised by run-off, and strong soil is built.  The end product is a cotton fabric and yarn that is toxin free.

I AM THE WORLD project was created with a vision of developing and designing products that can benefit a cause by allocating 100% of its sale proceeds to organizations focusing on educating children: our collective future.

As the Holiday Season is upon us, let us celebrate together the joy in giving, and rejoice in our collective vision of a cleaner, kinder earth.  Cheers!
